Daily Mail article on me!

Well not really it has been a week serialising Roy Taylor's book and each day giving various case histories. Today was me !

I’ve beaten diabetes — and lost 4st into bargain

Jane Akshar, 64, is a former IT consultant. Widowed with one 28-year-old daughter, she lives in Barry, South Walkes. She says:
Shortly after having my daughter in 1991, I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. By 1998, I’d been put on insulin injections and was having to inject myself four times a day. I thought that was simply how my life would be from that point onwards.
It was a friend who mentioned last summer that there were diets where you could reverse your diabetes and at first I thought he was talking absolute rubbish. But I looked online and found that it was true. "

I thought I’d be a diabetic for life but it just shows it can be done by anyone at any age. Jane Akshar is pictured above before her weight loss
I checked with my local surgery that it would be safe to embark on the diet and they couldn’t have been more supportive. Although it doesn’t sound like many calories, I found the diet really easy.
I¿ve now lost nearly four stone and at my last blood test I was told I¿m no longer diabetic. It¿s incredible

I was having things like scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for breakfast, salad with chicken for lunch and then some other meat with vegetables for dinner. I was never hungry.
With my diabetic nurse’s help I gradually reduced my insulin injections as my blood sugar came down and in July of this year, I took my last injection.
I’d gone from 120 units a day to nothing. I wanted to skip out of the surgery because I was so happy.

I only eat one meal a day – such as sprouts with bacon and toasted almonds – around 5pm and then nothing else for 24 hours.
I don’t find it difficult at all. If you’re eating the right foods, which contain fat and protein, you find that you’re full up after one meal anyway.
If more people did this we would have more money in the health service.

Roy Taylor says

Will this plan work for you?

Your odds of remission from type 2 diabetes through diet are a ‘dead cert’ soon after diagnosis, they drop to 50/50 in the first ten years, then fall further.
But remember that sometimes a 100/1 outsider will beat the odds. We’ve seen people who have had type 2 diabetes for more than 20 years reverse their condition.
No matter how long you’ve had type 2 diabetes, it is never too late to give this plan a try!

So I am 100/1 outsider!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keto Recipes from Diet Doctor

I love Diet Doctor, ok it is American but you can adjust it for the UK. I like that it plans your meals for the week and shopping list. I am also doing intermittent fasting which is easy because you wait you are hungry and then give your body a rest until the next day. If you want to know more about this it is all on the diet doctor website including some great videos fro Dr Jason Fung on intermittent fasting.

Today it is 17:00 and I am just cooking my dinner. I last ate at 9pm last night so 20 hours without food. The health benefits are enourmous but dont take my word read what Dr Fung has to say.

These are some photos from my food prep

This is the recipe I am following and the adjustments I made  because it is for two meals/two people and what I had in the fridge after shopping. I found spring onions were a replacement for scallions for example. Tescos dont do scallions
I then input those quantities into a free app on my phone called carb manager. This means I have a record of my actuals.

Then I follow the method.

As you can see keto has lots of vegs, but the right veg. And here is the finished result

The contents of the entire pan are 11 grams carbs and 785 calories!!!!

Being ill

Having a bad cough and cole over Xmas and New Year wrecked havoc with my blood sugars. Loads od 9-14, illness does that to diabetic. I kep my metformin at 2 but have now gone down to 1. I have changed doctors. stayed with my old surgery because the wonderful diabetic nurse and I wanted to work together but now I am no longer diabetic (Tee Hee) and it is a year since I moved out of catchment I 'fessed up. The new surgery is so close to home it will be a joy to get there. I have had a booking in appointment and changed my blood forms so they will get the results.

Still plateauing on weight loss but following Diet Doctor keto menu plan. Gosh the food is gorgeous. Hopefully I will get of the plateau

HBA1C now 40

A month ago my HBa1c was 43 which was out of the diabetic range and officially pre diabetic. Now it is 40

The World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests the following diagnostic guidelines for diabetes:
  • HbA1c below 42 mmol/mol (6.0%): Non-diabetic
  • HbA1c between 42 and 47 mmol/mol (6.0–6.4%): Impaired glucose regulation      (IGR) or Prediabetes
  • HbA1c of 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) or over: Type 2 diabetes

My weight loss has plateaued but I can cope with that. I am still 85 kilos but a year ago I was 104

NOT diabetic any more

The doctor sent me for a blood test and I altered the form so my HBa1C was checked as well as I had been getting a lot of low scores on my home monitor (4,5,6). I inquired at the doctors yesterday about the results. All the receptionist could tell it was normal but not the figure. Now normal is massively significant and she had a slot free to see the diabetic nurse, not my usual one but she would be able to tell me the score. I had to wait until 3 but decided it was worth it. Normal could mean anything.

I went in and she told me it was 43, Wow that is non diabetic

I weighed myself as well, 85 kilos, frustrating that I had not lost weight but I was so fired up about not being diabetic.

My steps along the way

My steps
1) Cutting carbs and following Michael Mosley meal plans
a.  Lost a lot(a kilo every 2 weeks) but eventually plateaued
2) Trying Exante meal sachets
a.  Not filling and eventually found they push my blood sugar up
3) Trying Fast 800 shakes
a.  Not filling enough
4) Going low carb, high fat and tracking carbs
a.  Much more filling and makes more scientific sense
5) Intermittent fasting 16:8
a.  Quite easy and makes scientific sense
6) Keto
a.  Reduced my blood sugar
