This review talks about the high end but there are plenty of small family run hotels and self catering apartments, try the West Bank in Luxor.

A Spanish mission working at Dra Abu El-Naga on the West Bank at Luxor has discovered a second, painted burial chamber in the tomb of Djehuty (TT11). Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni announced the discovery, adding that the Spanish team, led by Dr. José Galán of the National Research Center, Madrid, has been working at the site since 2002.

At the end of their 2008 season, the mission came across a 3 meter-deep shaft inside the burial chamber of Djehuty, an overseer of the treasury and overseer of works during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut (ca. 1479-1458 BC). At the beginning of 2009, they discovered a second burial chamber at the bottom of this shaft. The chamber is decorated on two of its walls, mostly with texts from the Book of the Dead. The discovery is remarkable, as only four other decorated burial chambers dating to this period are known. Although the names of Djehuty, his father, and his mother were intentionally erased in the upper part of the monument, they are intact in the newly discovered lower burial chamber. At the entrance to the lower chamber, the Spanish team found five gold earrings and two gold rings, which date to the early- to mid-18th Dynasty and probably belonged to Djehuty or to a member of his family.

Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, commented that only a few other objects from the tomb are known, as most of Djehuty’s funerary equipment was destroyed by fire in antiquity. Galán added that the discovery of this decorated chamber adds to our understanding of the religious and funerary beliefs of the mid-15th century BC, and of the elite of Queen Hatshepsut’s court.

You like your job you just wish it wasn’t under grey skies. Your partner wants to paint and raise the children. You don’t want your kids to value designer clothes and the latest gadget.
Living in Egypt with the advent of the internet means that you are not in a 3rd world country you are just in a world country. The nature of education and work has changed, with home working and home schooling; you just have decide where home is. If you want a pharaohs lifestyle, spacious home, low running costs, no big heating bills, year round sunshine, friendly people, room to breathe, breath taking views and easy cheap travel then Egypt is the place.
I went from living in a 3 bedroom terrace in a London suburb to owning a 2 million dollar property empire. My home is so big I rattle in it; I have a swimming pool, staff on site and a life style that means I am in control instead of being a wage slave.
Not only that but what I do is so much more satisfying. I employ 10 staff and sub contract others. Now in Egypt this means I am giving valuable jobs to people that really need it. I act as a conduit between perceived rich holiday makers and the locals. I make a difference in people’s lives...for the good. You are not just employing someone here; you are giving them a life line.
You too can change your life, live life the Egyptian way as part of a community. If you saw my life you would want it to, rent an apartment from me and catch the bug. Change your life and get back to basics, be part of the village, reject the rat race, live the real life.

I have one biological child Amira, now 18 but I have another 3 and one on the way via my husband and his Egyptian wife. It is almost like being a granny all the fun and none of the responsiblity. They love coming over and spending time with me which is such a positive testimony to our unusual polygamous lifestyle. I speak English around them even though they don't really understand me and encourage them to use the computer. I found this great multi lingual website with kiddies games in loads of languages and they can play matching and bingo games in either English or Arabic. Doa'a the eldest is as bright as a button, you show her somethign once and she picks it up just like that. She has got the hang of scrolling just watching me and I was stunned to see her using it. Yesterday they were all paying in my office and drawing pictures. I put the one Doa'a did as my profile picture on Facebook, she was proud as punch to see me put it on my computer. While they were here we phoned my daughter in the UK on Skype. She actually speaks Arabic so they were chatting away together. Hamdi eldest boy took over the headphones at one point and his sister was trying to show him how to use them. He said "I know how to do it you idiot" which cracked me daughter up. It was so good all the kids interacting as the step kids miss Amira a lot since she went to the UK for college.
